tuesday night

tuesday night was the last night of ruth's first residency at the labour. i took a bunch of photos but most of those came out pretty bad mainly because i couldn't get a good angle with all the people in the room whom I cleverly cropped out due to my mad photography skillz. (woo.)

after the show we went and ate churros. this man loves churros.

weekend

this weekend was family dinners and late nights. getting to bed at sunrise and waking up for pancakes and bacon at about 3 in the afternoon. late night surprise family drinks at kent st, black pudding and goat at josie bones and the cheese platter at the post office hotel. throw in a 30th birthday, an afternoon of wine and music and a decent sunset and it's been a pretty full couple of days.

solstice

the shortest day of the year dawned dark. wet and cold. proper winter. we had a garden of umbrellas drying in the front room at work and i got up several times to mop away the puddle forming under the door. after struggling through the walk to work in the rain this morning sharing a plastic umbrella i received free with a copy of Madison magazine last week, we managed to score a lift home with ruth in exchange for a harddrive full of new movies. instead of bonfires and chanting to celebrate the winter solstice we put some nachos in the oven and opened a bottle of wine.

early sunday morning

The nice thing about having friends who work in bars is the after close lock in. When all the general drinkers and patrons have packed up their pint glasses and headed off into the evening, the door to the bar closes, the lights come on and the bartenders get to sit down and have a few beers after a busy night. Last night was William's birthday drinks at Kent St and Peter took over his usual Saturday night shift being the generous brother he is. I had my camera out all night and the lock in photos are my favourite; everybody's a little worse for wear but completely surrounded by good people and close friends.

saturday afternoon

We took a wander up to Pearl Oyster cafe in Thornbury this morning for a late breakfast. When we first started seeing each other last year, Peter and I took a day off work together and spent an afternoon here eating cupcakes and drinking coffee and it's become one of my favourites. It helps that it's decked out in gorgeous vintage, 50s, nana style too. After lunch we had an afternoon drink with some of Peter's family for birthday cake and beer at the Peacock Hotel in Northcote.

friday night

After Peter finished work we wandered up to a new bar I'd been wanting to try called I Know A Place. It was this tiny little room with a big concrete beer garden out the back. It would be perfect in Summer but it was pretty lovely on a cold Winter's night. The bartender recommended us a few drinks and we waited until the hot dog stand was set up. We felt a little bit like somebody's older dorkier cousins who had arrived at the party far too early but it was good to sit just the two of us and deconstruct the week together.
